Dads in the Limelight – David Risley

Our eighteenth Dad in the Limelight is David Risley of & . I want to thank David for being a part of this series. It has been great getting to know him and now sharing him with all of you!

1) Tell me about yourself, (as well as how you are in the limelight for my readers knowledge)

I am a full-time blogger and make my living from home. And, honestly, I’m in the limelight because people say I am. πŸ™‚
2) Tell me about your family
My wife is Russian-born and came to the States when she was 15. She is a chemical engineer by training, but today is a full-time mother to my 2 kids. My daughter, Elyana, is two and my son, Nathan, was just born about a month ago. Crazy times.

3) What has been the largest challenge you have had in being a father?

Balancing work and family, as well as the happiness of my wife. My wife realizes the value of staying home while the kids are so young, but it is always the most enjoyable thing to do. πŸ™‚ I love what I do for a living, so keeping everything in balance has probably been the most challenging thing.
4) What advice would you give to other fathers?

Put them first, and set a good example. My little girl is now copying almost everything we say and do. Really makes you think about yourself! Also, let your kids feel like they’re helping. Their help might not always be that helpful, but they try and it is very important.

5) Seeing that you (or your position) is in the limelight, how have you come to balance parenthood and outside life?
Especially with the birth of my son, my evenings are now almost exclusively family. If I do anything related to work, it is usually after my daughter goes to bed. During the day, I try to keep normal work hours…. always challenging when you work from home.
6) What have you learned from the fathers that you have interacted with?
There is no right way to raise a kid. We all do it our own way. Sometimes we goof, but that’s all part of the process.

7) What else would you share regarding your experiences as a father thus far?

I’m enjoying it immensely. Especially as my daughter gets a little older, she is a lot of fun!
8) What have been the most memorable experiences that you have had thus far as a parent?
My kids laughing. I just melt. I can’t wait until my son starts cracking some smiles and laughing.
